When did you start DJing?
Started as a rotation DJ on WVUM 90.5FM, UM’s Radio.

First gig:
Kill Your Idol Ladies night after mentioning to the bar manager I was part of WVUM. They basically made me come back every week after the first night. Thanks to them I do this full time now..

Favorite party ever played:
Wow, too many, but probably the time I opened for Mount Kimbie.

Favorite woman DJ:
I gotta say I loved Aurora Halal since the first time I ever saw her.

Best record you’ve ever bought:
I love all my records, but lately I’ve been playing John Tejada’s Parabolas while making pasta.

How would you define the term DISCWOMAN?
A woman who can mix, like a DJ.

Pet peeve when DJing:
My headphones not staying on, I should probably buy new headphones.

Do you dance when you DJ?
No, just kidding, yes.

Can you DJ when wasted?
Of course.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten?
“You are meant to be doing this!” – makes me feel ok about not having a 9-5.

Place you’d like to play:
Berghain – Berlin

Something you want everyone to know about you:
I am a huge fan of Adventure Time

DISCWOMAN #12: ARIELE MAX

AMAX_1

When did you start DJing?
I’ve been VJing and throwing parties for a while but didn’t really dive in as a DJ until 2013!

First gig in NYC?
There was this monthly show/ party I did at the Body Actualized Center called ACCESS.

Favorite party ever played?
I think the most fun I’ve had Djing was at this party I put together at Bossa Nova Civic Club called SPLASH FX consisting of an awesome crew of female/ female identified DJs. So good! Some fellow DISCWOMEN played that night. It’s just one more reason why I’m especially excited about this event and everyone involved in it

Favorite woman DJ
I have so many favorites; there are so many influential women djing right now.  Asma (Nguzunguzu) has been on my top 3 for a while. Tigga Calore and Juliana Huxtable always thrown down amazing sets, too.

Best record you’ve ever bought
I just bought an amazing record from A1 but I don’t know who it’s by or what it’s called because it’s blank except for some illegible scribble that was written on it.

How would you define the term Discwoman?
That’s pretty self explanatory, right?

Pet peeve when DJing
People who accidentally spill their entire drink on my gear while I am DJing or VJing.

Do you dance when you DJ?
Yes

Can you DJ when wasted?
I have, but…I wouldn’t recommend it.

What’s best compliment you’ve ever gotten?
I think it’s sweet when people approach me to tell me they are fans of what I do, but just watching people dance is a compliment in itself. Place you’d like to play?
The Museum of Natural History
Something you want everyone to know about you
I also go by dollargem.

DISCWOMAN #11: AMBER VALENTINE

AMBER_VALENTINE_1

When did you start DJing?
2006

First gig in NYC?
Some kind of art party somewhere? I don’t remember… but my first residency was at this party called Spin Sugar at a little club in the East Village, it was just the greatest mix of every kind of lesbian imaginable from every scene. That club closed and is now a restaurant. I recently ate a hamburger where the DJ booth used to be!

Favorite party ever played?
Past: Judy! That party was so wild. One time they made this whole paper mache rock formation that encrusted the dj booth and they called the night “Judy to the Center of the Earth”. That felt radical! OH—AND NEW YEARS 2012 AT PUBLIC ASSEMBLY IN THE BACK ROOM WAS THE MOST MAGIC IN ONE ROOM AT ONE TIME. If you were there, you know exactly what I mean!!!

Present: Pat, a party JD Samson and I throw together. I love the energy.

Favorite woman DJ
There are so many… Kim Ann Foxman, Lauren Flax, Maya Jane Coles, Christy Love, JD Samson, Juliana Huxtable… I mean I could go on and on… also Mursi Layne really knows how to get everyone moving.

Best record you’ve ever bought
I do love the Times Square movie soundtrack for just chilling out. So artfully and beautifully compiled! Most of my music I get digitally these days.

How would you define the term Discwoman?
She who plays discs?? I have no idea how to answer this other than I am super psyched to be playing Discwoman with all of these other amazing DISCWOMEN!

Pet peeve when DJing
When I play someone’s request and they DON’T DANCE. UM…exSQUEEZE ME???

Do you dance when you DJ
OH YES.

Can you DJ when wasted?
Yes.

What’s best compliment you’ve ever gotten?
People coming out and having a good time at my events, enabling me to support myself doing this is the biggest compliment. I’m thankful and happy about it every single day. I don’t care if that sounds cheesy, cause IT’S THE TRUTH! The other best compliment was when Boy George blew me kisses from backstage while I was warming up the crowd for him. One of the best nights of my life.

Place you’d like to play?
I would love to play on a glamorous disco cruise, a warehouse rave situation, or Miss Piggy and Kermit’s wedding. I’m open to other amazing things that pop up though!

DISCWOMAN #10: KIM ANH

KIM_ANH_1

When did you start DJing?
Technically I started DJ’ing in 1998. I was a little baby raver then and only ever DJ’d in exchange for a 6 pack and party favors. I started DJ’ing as a career in 2008.

First gig in NYC?
An after party at a loft on Jane Street about 13 years ago.

Favorite party ever played?
Old school Booby Trap!, Dick & Fanny (UK) and supporting The Knife in LA on their last tour. Things went beyond levels.

Favorite woman DJ
Just one? Can I say two? Ellen Allien and Venus X.

Best record you’ve ever bought
I don’t think I can answer that! But one of the most influential would be Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works 85-92.

How would you define the term Discwoman?
A woman who knows the past and future of music.

Pet peeve when DJing
REQUESTS. BYE.

Do you dance when you DJ?
Like a queen lip syncing for her life.

Can you DJ when wasted?
I’ve definitely done it.

What’s best compliment you’ve ever gotten?
As a DJ, I guess “thank you”. A man ran up to me one year during LA PRIDE with tears in his eyes saying “I can’t believe you’re playing all these old tracks. You’re taking me back to my club days in Manhattan in the 1980s. You’re giving me life girl!” He thanked me, kissed my hand and shimmied away.

Place you’d like to play?
I’d love to play at Berghain again.

Something you want everyone to know about you
I also write and compose music.

When did you start DJing?
2012

First gig in NYC?
With my Good Kids brothers at Home Sweet Home, at our weekly party.

Favorite party ever played?
Probably a Powrplnt benefit party at Bossa Nova a few months back – I was running on no sleep after shooting a video for three days straight and made the wildest set I ever have, and got to DJ for my sis Kay Rizz.

Favorite woman DJ
There are so many…Venus X, Juliana Huxtable, Asma of Nguzunguzu, A E Zimmer, Jubilee, Uniique, SHYBOI, Compton Chic…not to mention all the girls singing and rapping, making music too– Lafawndah, Kelela, Kay Rizz, Rahel, Jungle Pussy, Princess Nokia just to name some highlights. It is a very inspiring moment in music out here right now!

Best record you’ve ever bought
It is a little hard to remember buying a record.

How would you define the term Discwoman?
My good friend Thurmon recently said – “I probably just have fear of mortality and I just want to make things that make people move, which is like the opposite of dying.”

Pet peeve when DJing
Do not ask me to play Aviici.

Do you dance when you DJ?
How can I not?

Can you DJ when wasted?
I’d rather not.

What’s best compliment you’ve ever gotten?
People who I am inspired and motivated by say the same of me – it has happened in a few transcendent ways.

Place you’d like to play?
Most places, but right now I want to play in London and more rooftops, in general.

Something you want everyone to know about you

I run a record label called DOOM DAB and you can hear my mixes here :)

When did you start DJing?
In Seattle in the 90’s at a pirate radio station. My first ever beat match “mix” experience came from playing a Iggy Pop song with a Nina Simone song. It was all love after that.

First gig in NYC:
It was either a Halloween loft party on Bedford Avenue and N. 4th in Williamsburg or Meow Mix Club in L.E.S. Manhattan in 2001 a month after I moved to NY. It was long enough ago I’m having trouble remembering! I DJ’d in Seattle under the moniker E-RACE for many years prior to that. After moving to N.Y. I found out someone had stolen the moniker and that was fracking weird so, now I’m going by my name SHANNON F.. Bite that!

Favorite party ever played:
Djing with Volvox and Lauren Flax at Glasslands this spring was a pretty amazing line up! I love djing alongside bad asses like these two.

Favorite woman DJ:
There’s a few but, Lauren Flax, Volvox, Pandora’s Juke Box and Tama Sumo in Berlin all come to mind.

Best record you’ve ever bought:
A 4AD compilation called Lonely As An Isore.

How would you define the term DISCWOMAN?
Like Discman but, with women or the feminine as the dominant figure in terms of societal modality. The way ‘man’ or the masculine is used in society to define everything for the last 600,000 years.

Pet peeve when DJing:
Requests! Its not a damn wedding or a frat party so, don’t bother asking me to play Madonna. Especially, if I’m already playing it! Not that I would ever play Madoodoo! OK, maybe Ray of Light.

Do you dance when you DJ?
Absolutely.

Can you DJ when wasted?
Preferrably.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten?
I love you!

Place you’d like to play:
Berghain or Panorama Bar in Berlin .

Something you want everyone to know about you:
I doing my best to dance this mess around.

DISCWOMAN #7: BETA LIBRAE

BETA_LIBRE_1

When did you start DJing?
2009-2010 with a group of friends in Kansas City.

First gig in NYC:
Ace Hotel lobby which is funny because it was the most money I ever made from DJing and nobody dances or realizes you’re there.

Favorite party ever played:

All the ladies nights at Bossa Nova over the past year. I’ve learned sooo much, made sick friends, it’s just the best!

Favorite woman DJ:
Terre Thaemlitz if that counts. Otherwise Umfang because she has supported me more than anyone and is a great DJ.

Best record you’ve ever bought:
Maurizio – M6

How would you define the term DISCWOMAN?

A lady sharing her knowledge and educating others through music selection.

Pet peeve when DJing:
When someone books you as their guest for their party but you only play from like 10-11pm then you’re done and the residents go on. Why even have a guest if you’re afraid to give up the spotlight for a few hours?

Do you dance when you DJ?
Maybe a slow motion sway.

Can you DJ when wasted?
Not sure. I tend to lose track of time and space, but I think that happens sober too.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten?
i think just seeing the same faces over and over. It’s a compliment without words. The strangers become your friends and you know they are genuinely there because they enjoy the music and they remember you.

Place you’d like to play:
I’ve never been able to DJ outside or around nature so that would be real nice.

Something you want everyone to know about you:

I’d like to share some music I’ve been working on with you very soon!

DISCWOMAN #6: LAUREN FLAX

LAUREN_FLAX_1

When did you start DJing?
1997

First gig in NYC:
Filter 14 (RIP) in the Meatpacking District in 2002 just after moving here.

Favorite party ever played:
Fuji rock up in the mountains of Japan.

Favorite woman DJ:
Good god, thats a tough one. So many to choose from that beat it consistently. I’d have to say DJ Heather.

Best record you’ve ever bought:
Portishead live at Roseland.

How would you define the term Discwoman?
Lady bosses.

Pet peeve when DJing:
Absolutely no requests taken. Ever. Not even from Oprah.

Do you dance when you DJ?
Always! I feel it as much as (I hope) the crowd does.

Can you DJ when wasted?
Yep.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten?
You look as if Carrie Bradshaw and Skrillex had a baby.

Place you’d like to play:
I’m going to have to agree with my bandmate here and say Ibiza. It’s weird that I haven’t been yet. She can handle the foam party tho.

Something you want everyone to know about you:
I love bodega socks.

DISCWOMAN #5: BONNIE DANGER

BONNIE_DANGER

Started playing college parties back in 2004.

My first official gig in an NYC club was back in 2006 at Fat Baby.

DJ K Swift r.i.p and DJ Kiss

Best record you’ve ever bought:
Frankie Knuckles – Ready for the Real World

How would you define the term Discwoman?
Something we’ve been doing and continue to do; pioneering – doing our thing in this industry.

Pet peeve when DJing:
That annoying poke in the back followed by a song request. Grrrrrr!

Do you dance when you DJ?
Just a mad head bop.

Can you DJ when wasted?
Haha, yeah.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten?
Honestly, seeing people feeling my sets on the dance floor is the best compliment given.

Place you’d like to play:
The Under Water Party in Paris

Something you want everyone to know about you:
I have a twin brother who DJs as well!

DISCWOMAN #4: CIARRA BLACK

CIARRA_BLACK_1

When did you start DJing?
Around 4 years ago while living in Philly

First gig in NYC:
It was at the Flat when it first opened. I was still living in Philly at the time, but I guest DJ’d my best friend DJ Jane Pain’s party called Sickening.

Favorite party ever played:
Probably this past 4th of July at Palisades. The night was a collab between the Ascetic House label, No-Tech (my monthly with JR Nelson) and Ad Hoc. Marshstepper, Profligate, Person of Interest, Jerome, and Rosemary Arp played. Everyone’s live sets were incredible, perfect amount of fog and overall vibes. Pretty much all of my favorite people were there. Very good night.

Favorite woman DJ:
I’ve never seen her DJ in person but i’d have to say Helena Hauff. I think she is fierce, has incredible selection and technique and I’m also a big fan of her as a producer.

Best record you’ve ever bought:
Most recently Final Exposure – Vortex

How would you define the term DISCWOMAN?

I’d like to imagine it as a cyborg feminist related term.

Pet peeve when DJing:
Drunk people with no boundaries hovering in or around the booth.

Do you dance when you DJ?
Usually just a head bob but when the time is right I occasionally bring out Robin S-“Show Me Love” and then things can get a little crazy.

Can you DJ when wasted?
Usually not very well… but it has happened. I try not to.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten?
Being asked to DJ Discwoman 😉

Place you’d like to play:
Europe

Something you want everyone to know about you:

I am a twin.
