Interview with A/K/A AND DURIO: 2/3 of Singapore’s women DJ collective ATTAGIRL! Playing W Hotel FOR DISCWOMAN July 8, 2015

When did you start DJing?

A/K/A: I learned a couple of tricks from friends and took a short little course when I was 17, but I properly started Djing in 2012 when I joined the FFF Girl DJ Bootcamp in a month long program founded by some of the best female DJs in Singapore.

DURIO: End of 2012

How did ATTAGIRL! come about?

A/K/A: We all met at the bootcamp, Serene (Durio), Shy (Jaydah) and I (AKA). A year on after that, Serene and I were catching up over drinks, and thought perhaps we should start some project together following up from our FFF mentors. We thought to start parties to encourage girls to get creative together and pulled Shy in. The rest was history.

First gig in Singapore:

A/K/A: The FFF Bootcamp graduation party. It was held at the Wine Bar in Zouk, the oldest, and one of the best clubs in Singapore.

DURIO: FFF Girl DJ Bootcamp graduation bash

Favorite party ever played:

A/K/A: I haven’t played many big gigs, but I got my first opportunity this year to play Beats and Beyond with party promoters Good Times and Singapore label Darker Than Wax. Nothing feels better than playing with people you really respect, and for friends who truly support and enjoy your selection.

DURIO: ATTAGIRL! parties! And a memorable one in Malaysia where i DJ for a charity event on a rooftop in an old heritage street filled with people.

Favorite woman DJ:

A/K/A: B.Traits, Annie Mac, Ikonika, Mary Ann Hobbs, TOKiMONSTA, Maya Jane Coles, Singaporean DJs Reiki and Angela Flame.. Some of the few that I love for different kinds of music.

DURIO: I have big love for my talented ATTAGIRL! partners, and many Singapore based DJs. Besides that, current fav will be Ikonika and Madam X.

Best record you’ve ever bought:

A/K/A: This is so hard. But ok, I’ll go with Underworld’s live album Everything Everything. This was the one that started it all for me in 2000. It still brings back a lot of memories.

How would you define the term DISCWOMAN?

A/K/A: Innovation, progression, fun.

DURIO: Discwoman bring girls together through music (Just like ATTAGIRL!).

Pet peeve when DJing:

A/K/A: When people come up and say I should play something more “trancey”, “fist-pumping”, “less boring” or anything else. It’s rude, we aren’t just entertaining you, at least make a polite request instead of demanding music as if the whole club belongs to you.

DURIO: No drinks.

Do you dance when you DJ?

A/K/A: I guess! I move a little, haha.

DURIO: Depending on how much drinks i’ve had.

Can you DJ when wasted?

A/K/A: I tried, and I wouldn’t recommend doing that too often.

DURIO: Better then ever!

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten?

A/K/A: From a DJ in Tokyo who listened to my set on and said it was so enjoyable and I should be playing for one of the most respected bass nights in Tokyo. My heart swelled.

Place you’d like to play:

A/K/A: Anywhere that has good people and good vibes.

DURIO: NYC (Dream come true!), Berlin, London, Tokyo, any parts of the world!

Something you want everyone to know about you:

A/K/A: I really like instant noodles. Just don’t eat too much of that though, you might lose all your hair :)

DURIO: I’m in love with the coco..nut drinks!

When did you start DJing? I started 10 years ago. I used to have a radio show, Ce soir on danse, on a college radio. A friend asked if I’d like to try DJ at one of his night and I loved it so much, the next week I was begging a local club owner to let me start a weekly on Sundays.

First gig in Montreal: That will have to be that night my friend let me play at Saphir, it was around Christmas and I was playing a lot more rock’n’roll back then.

Favorite party ever played: A party in a downtown Detroit loft. We got to play the window open until really late. No cops showed up. The crowd was just amazing. It ended with the remaining people going to the casino around 8am, all dressed up in leopard fur coat.

Favorite woman DJ: Miss Kittin is the reason I got into electronic music but these days I follow Steffi, Cassy, DJ Minx and I’m so obsessed with The Black Madonna that I’m taking a 24h trip to Toronto to go see her at A Club Called Rhonda.

Best record you’ve ever bought: My mine “Hypnotic Tango”. Just because it’s the one record that made me want to start digging. I had just moved to Berlin and went to this amazing Italo Disco party. The next day I was record shopping and the first song I listened to was this record that happened to have blown my mind the night before!

How would you define the DISCWOMAN?  A community that put women talents up front.

Pet peeve when DJing:  When I have a male friend with me in the booth while I DJ and people come up to him thinking he’s the one doing all the job. It did save me from annoying special requests though.

Do you dance when you DJ? Of course

Can you DJ when wasted?  Yes, but throughout the years I realized I play my best sets sober.

What’s best compliment you’ve ever gotten? That I was really good at reading a crowd and I was able to take them on a journey.

Place you’d like to play? Anywhere really! Travelling and playing music for people, discovering record stores, finding out about different scenes, in different cities is just what I like to do. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it.

Something you want everyone to know about you: Disco is my first love.

When did you start DJing? 2 or 3 years ago

First gig in Montreal: February 2013, r.i.p afterparty spot called The Fall

Favorite party ever played: Notsuoh in Houston in winter 2013

Best record you’ve ever bought: Spontaneously I’d say Comme à la radio by Brigitte Fontaine and Chicago Art Ensemble is memorable for me, maybe not THE best but one of the heaviest in term of inspiration

Favorite woman DJ: Uniiqu3

How would you define the term DISCWOMAN? Wavy, curly, power

Pet peeve when DJing: No sub

Do you dance when you DJ? All the time

Can you DJ when wasted? I am better when wasted.

What’s best compliment you’ve ever gotten? «You’re on some real shit dude»

Place you’d like to play: Missy Elliot’s private mansion v.i.p pool/spa section party?

Something you want everyone to know about you: I produce beautiful music, check it out.

When did you start DJing? 2 or 3 years ago, 2009, my first year of university

First gig in Montreal: I believe it was a university residence semi-formal event, I wore my high school prom dress & played a lot of electro house.

Favorite party ever played: I played this sweet house party in Saskatoon where I went b2b with a couple dudes. I played cellular grime songs & various tracks at really weird tempos till 6am.

Favorite woman DJ:  Analog Soul (Jacky Sommer + DatKat), Ellen Allien, Avalon Emerson, & The Black Madonna are five who are extremely influencial and always inspiring to me.

Best record you’ve ever bought: Probably DJ Deeon – Induced EP because at least 50% of the tracks are about sex and 100% of them are ghetto house

How would you define DISCWOMAN? Fierce DJs & producers who happen to be female.

Pet peeve when DJing? Drinks anywhere near the decks and dudes not letting me do my thang

Do you dance when you Dj? YAS, it makes me sad when DJs don’t look like they’re having fun :(

Can you DJ when wasted? Yes, and I am willing to take more risks, especially with cheesy songs.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten? Probably when Avalon Emerson said I was good, because it came from her and she is an amazing woman!

Place you’d like to play: Panorama Bar at 8am, anywhere in Detroit, a Christian Dior or Raf Simons runway show, Italy, Japan, Australia

Something you want everyone to know about you: My goal this summer is to host a DJ night where the music is stricly blog house/ electro house from the mid to late 2000s.

When did you start DJing?  I started in summer 2013. Then I’ve learn who to play with vinyls last summer.

First gig in Montreal:  I did the first part of my friend STWO and Nouvel Âge in Belmont

Favorite party ever played:  I’d say the last 24 Hour Of Vinyl in Montreal. I didn’t sleep, stayed at the party the whole time and I was DJing at 9am with my two favs: Mat Coates and DJ Asma. Good times!>

Favorite woman DJ: Kronika is one of the illest in the game. Shout out to Eden Hagos as well!

Best record you’ve ever bought:  I’d say Hollywood Recording by Sa-Ra Creative Partners.

How would you define the term DISCWOMAN?  Portable discs were all our best friends back in the day. I used to travel the whole city to go to school everyday. In certain culture, woman share the knowledge from generation to generation. Now, as we are DISCWOMAN, the knowledge has to be passed on by all these good DJs.

Pet peeve when DJing: Don’t ask me for some Drake, I will make an evil laugh and ignore you.

Do you dance when you DJ? YES, I’m a trained dancer. So yes yes yes, I dance when I do my transition and when the song goes on. Dance dance dance.

Can you DJ when wasted?  I drink to be in the same universe as everyone, but I’m more of a stoner DJ.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever gotten?  High Klassified manager said something super sweet to me last weekend. “You’re like the one who put all these cats (Kaytranada, High Klassified etc) on the map, you are like the mama of the scene” That made me smile.

Place you’d like to play:  I would cry if they give me a gig at Low End Theory in L.A. I’ve been there 3 times and this place is like mecca to me.

Something you want everyone to know about you: I’M THE BEST SELEKTA UNDER 25.
